"In the News"

Yesterday, I heard on the radio that longtime CBS news anchor Christopher Glenn had died. I confess that I am a news junkie, but the names of TV personalities tend to escape me, so I wasn't quite sure who Glenn was.

Then, they played a clip from "In the News."

For those of us who spent Saturday mornings in the '70s and '80s plopped in front the TV for a weekly cartoon dose, "In the News" was a regular feature in CBS' lineup. It only lasted a few minutes and focused on one topic. Glenn was the anchor and narrator.

It was the music ... or more correctly, sound ... that brought it all back. That weird blippity, bloopity computer sound. I remember a turning globe. The rest is a blur. No doubt that not yet confirmed as a news junkie, I used the blippity, bloopity sound as a cue to hit the bathroom or get another bowl of cereal.

Were you a child of this era? Listen to this and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about:

The other thing I remember is that the blippity, bloopity sound always scared me a bit. Maybe because news is so serious and grown-up compared to the irreverence of cartoons. It was a piece of broccoli among a bowlful of Corn Pops.

RIP, Christopher Glenn. I might not have remembered you until yesterday, but rest assured you were a fond memory for those of us who shared our carefree childhood Saturday mornings with you.

Oh that music!! I wonder if he did some of those slideshows I had to watch in school? His voice (RIP) would put me to sleep I am sure of it!! I can just hear him talking about cells and mytosis or the equidistant borders of Iran maybe.

I totally didn't know the name but I placed the voice and noise. Crazy!

Damn, Sam! As you were describing it, it sort of rang a bell - and then to hear it ... God, that was scary. It had kind of the "Good morning, Professor Falken. Would you like to play a game?" ominous vibe.
